Professional: Dr. Matthew Berkheiser is the Executive Director of the Environmental Health and Safety department at MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Berkheiser holds a bachelors degree in Environmental Science from Sam Houston State University, a masters in Environmental Management from the University of Houston at Clear Lake and a doctorate in Occupational & Environmental Health from the University of Texas School of Public Health. Dr. Berkheiser is a CIH and CSP.

He has over 20 years of experience in the environmental health and safety field. Dr. Berkheiser has worked for both the state of Texas and federal government in varying capacities. His career started in December 1993, when he was employed by MD Anderson Cancer Center as a Safety Technician. He was employed as an industrial hygienist with Kelsey-Seybold’s Occupational Health Program at NASA-Johnson Space Center from 1995 through 1999. Dr. Berkheiser also served in the Biology/Environmental Sciences Department at Sam Houston State University. While serving as an instructor for the undergraduate Environmental Science courses, he also served as the Industrial Hygiene Manager for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Dr. Berkheiser returned to MD Anderson in 2003. His primary customers and collaborators at MD Anderson include the Facilities staff, Employee Health & Well-Being, Nursing and Infection Control. He spends a majority of his time mentoring his staff on developing their technical and leadership skills. He became a Certified Facilitator for CoreClarity, Inc. in 2014.

Why I Love What I Do: I enjoy watching the aha moments happen and love to see people become a little more self aware after they finish the class.

Up Close & Personal: Sports fan, Houston Texans, Houston Astros. Enjoy family time. Love movies, books and want to get back to golf. Coached baseball for the little league teams for awhile. Enjoy working with my staff on their leadership development.
